> Verdict: As a developer I really hate how addictive I found this as a player.
I needed to take a break after playing for one hour. My fingers aren't used to clicking that intensely. And for good reasons, the game was addictive and wanted me to keep going, keep pushing.
Smash Out Colony is a new take on the Brick Breaker genre where you swing your paddle (hammer) towards incoming projectiles. You can aim and time your hits against incoming hordes of insects, each with different stats and abilities, while collecting points to invest in upgrades. Some are permanent, some reset on game over.
Game flow
Smash Out Colony does a good job building momentum and having game beats at the right time. Each level is a quick 30-300 second run. Pacing feels smooth, starting slow and building up fast. There's enough focus on making hit combos and planning ahead to where you hit the hordes of enemies. There are also moments where levels feel really overwhelming and keep you stressed all the way to the end. This is good and adds nicely to the interest curve.
Art style
The art style is cartoony, with bright, well-mixed colors. The UI is clear and stays out of the way of the gameplay while still providing enough information when needed. The only downside is the lack of widescreen monitor support.
What I would improve
A lot of upgrades available!
Interface is not properly working on wide-screen resolutions.

// designer's takeaway
This is an addictive and splashing game with a nostalgic feeling to it. I really liked the progression and unlockables, and it kept me coming back for more.
> What I'd steal: I love the progression of 'weapons' that are permanently unlocked and can be used to alter your play-style.
