Books

Here are some books I enjoyed over the years.

Dungeons & Dragons

No one can ignore the impact Dungeons and Dragons have on practically all games out there. In love the game, the Game Master manual, the Player Handbook and many of the shows (live plays) that live around this culture. I started with 4th edition and have been playing as Dungeon Master countless times. While the focus of the books are around the tabletop game, it is the foundation of almost all video games out there.

The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses by Jesse Schell

This book completely changed the way I think about games as a player and as a developer. Jesse uses different ‘lenses’ that will give you better understanding the underlying working of why games (or rather, experiences) work the way they do. Asking the right questions to tweak and improve your game in ways that you haven’t thought about.

Level Design Book (online)

Vision: Color and Composition for Film by Hans P Bacher

This book is such an amazing source of information about colors, compositions, framing and much more. While the title suggest it is for film, almost everything can and will be applicable for games. While rich in information the book stands out on the visuals that is an unlimited source of inspiration.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Creating a Champion

As a wannabe concept artist this book is packed with beautiful illustrations of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Developers and designers share insight on the how, why and what of choices the made during the development of the game.

Index Card RPG by Runehammer, Shadowdark, Blade runner (replicant rebellion), Cyberpunk RED and Flee, Mortals!

All these roleplaying books bring something unique to the table, or to your games. I love the style and simplicity of rules from Index Card RPG. I love the nostalgic dark and black and white style of Shadowdark. Blade Runner and the add-on Replicant Rebellion have both an amazing atmosphere and the writing is just as beautiful (and hopeful in a hopeless world). Cyberpunk has always been a weakness for me, there are no words to describe this masterpiece. The game, the story and the roleplaying game. And Flee, Mortals! is the best book for designing monsters and encounters for any RPG tabletop game.
